Affliction…

Taking medication is like being admitted to a territory of illness. This territory has different consequences. All of us, at some point in our lives, have the experience of taking medicine and of residing in this land for short, non-continuous periods; but the experience of taking medicine throughout one’s life that is, permanent residence in the land of illness is a kind of chronic disease. It naturalizes illness and being ill, and changes the human being in the world. This circulation introduces new regulations and relationships into the patient’s life, and the patient must adapt himself to them.
The patient’s obedience to this new system means obedience to a complex and important system of drug design, production, and distribution that has spread across the entire world. The patient, in addition to being a consumer, also becomes part of this system. A single pill, for itself, has a large and influential global network of consumers, all of whom are placed under standardized control to be made uniform. Merely producing and selling a pill is not enough. The drug, which is carefully packaged from a box or bottle and so on is presented within a complex classification of need, information, protection, and control.
